3 Mistakes I Made Waiting For The “Right Time” To Take A Risk

How many times have you told yourself, "I'll do it when the time is right?" Are you still waiting?

I know I have, only to realize that the perfect moment is a mirage. Waiting for the right time was an excuse to avoid taking responsibility for my own life.

Here are three mistakes I made by waiting too long and the lessons I’ve learned.

Mistake #1: Waiting to quit a job

I stayed at a “good enough” job for four years, believing that a better opportunity would present itself when the time was right.

When I finally took the leap and quit, I realized the perfect time never existed. Quitting forced me to seek new opportunities, learn new skills, and grow in ways I never could’ve planned for.

Lesson: Trust your instincts and take action. The right time to leave a job that doesn’t serve you is now. You’ve figured it out before and will figure it out again.

Mistake #2: Waiting to leave a relationship

I clung to a 7-year relationship that wasn’t working because it was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter, not the end.

When the relationship finally ended, my life changed very quickly. I moved to a different city and restarted in a new direction. Rather than ruin, I stumbled onto a path exceeding all my expectations.

Lesson: Trust your instincts and take decisive action to prioritize your happiness. You will find your way.

Mistake #3: Waiting to start therapy

I struggled with anxiety for years, always thinking I’d seek help when I felt “ready” or had more money.

When I finally started therapy, I wished I hadn’t waited so long. It opened up a fresh perspective I couldn’t reach on my own. It provided clarity through feedback on my specific challenges.

Lesson: Don’t delay your emotional well-being—prioritize your mental health. It’s the most important thing you have.

Now is the right time.

In each of these situations, I learned that waiting for the perfect moment only held me back.

The truth is, there’s no “right time” to take a risk. The right time is now.

So, take that leap, embrace the unknown, and surprise yourself in ways you never imagined.
