The Great Millennial Paradox: The One Skill We Were Told Didn’t Matter Is The One Skill We Need Most

Society’s playbook isn’t working anymore.

We did everything “right.” We followed the rules, and we did what we were told. We went to college, got good jobs, bought homes—and now find ourselves struggling to afford this lifestyle. We’re trapped working way too much just to stay afloat.

I’m a struggling millennial, and I’ve experienced firsthand how conventional wisdom no longer applies. I’ve learned that calculated life planning does not serve me well—experimentation is our only way forward now.

We are left to rewrite our own scripts. Step one: risk failure to cultivate courage.

The Importance of Taking Risks and Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Playing it safe may have worked for previous generations, but millennials must embrace risk-taking to succeed in today’s ever-changing world. Embracing uncertainty is the only thing that will allow you to discover new passions, develop resilience, and ultimately redefine what success means to you. You need to know what you want before you can aim at it.

Don’t let fear dictate your life—challenge yourself to face it head-on.

Practical Steps for Risk-Taking and Cultivating Courage

  • Start small: Do one thing that makes you feel uncomfortable. This could be as simple as trying a new hobby, speaking up in a meeting, or striking up a conversation with a stranger. The more you practice stepping out of your comfort zone, the more confidence you’ll have in taking greater risks.
  • Surround yourself with risk-takers: Connect with people who inspire you to push your boundaries and learn from their experiences.
  • Accept failure as part of the process: Understand that not every risk will lead to success, but each failure is a step towards a different life.

It’s Time for Millennials to Take Control

The traditional path may have let millennials down, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless. With a focus on risk-taking and cultivating courage, millennials can take control of their lives and create their own version of success.

It’s time to stop regretting the past and start embracing the uncertainty of each new day.

The future is ours to create. Let’s get going.
