Most millennials can’t write clearly and coherently despite daily opportunities to express themselves.
Clear writing fosters understanding and progress. Miscommunication breeds confusion and conflict. When we fail to craft our messages with clarity and purpose, consequences arise far beyond an ineffectual email or tweet.
Flawed communication undermines trust.
Technology does not improve communication—it merely provides additional channels.
We must leverage new platforms and tools to enhance how we share knowledge and make meaning, not replace thoughtful expression with likes, hearts and emojis.
When we distill complex thoughts into 280 characters or less, we do so at the cost of nuance, validity and credibility.
Technology alone can’t transform how we communicate.
Mastery of communication can’t happen by accident. It requires dedication and practice.
We must develop our communication skills, the same as any other skill. Strong writing follows from strong thinking, and clear writing creates clear thinking.
Building the ability to think logically, critically and creatively translates to advancing how we write, think, and speak.
How to sharpen your message:
- Craft: Write like you think. Use complete sentences and proper grammar.
- Structure: Organize your thoughts coherently to make it easy for the reader to follow.
- Cut: Eliminate unnecessary words and focus on the main point to avoid confusion.
- Proofread: Check for errors and inconsistencies before hitting send to maintain credibility.
Write like you mean it.
The ability to articulate stories and ideas that resonate is a superpower.
We must embrace the responsibility we have to ourselves and others to communicate as clearly and effectively as possible. What we articulate shapes culture, drives progress and determines collective success or failure.
Words matter.
The future remains unwritten. Our stories are still being told.
Let us write them well.
