There I was, 5pm on a sunny Friday evening, sitting in my car talking to myself.
It might seem odd, but as a busy millennial, I’ve found that mental priming exercises have dramatically improved my mindfulness, focus, and self-awareness. We’re told to warm up before exercising. What about warming up before challenging mental tasks?
You’ll find me sitting in my car talking to myself most evenings around 5pm. I press record on my iPhone XS and speak for 2-5 minutes on the good I’ve done that day and prime myself for what’s to come. It gives me a chance to let go before I begin again.
So, if you’re a fellow millennial feeling overwhelmed by the demands of modern life, let me assure you that these simple yet powerful exercises can make all the difference.
Are you ready to unlock the potential of mental priming and experience a life-changing shift in your daily mindset? Stay with me, and let’s explore the tools that await you.
Mental Priming Exercise #1: Stream-of-Consciousness Writing
Let your thoughts and feelings flow into the page.
I’ve been writing to myself in one form or another for the past decade. I cannot emphasize enough how profound of an impact it has had. Studies have shown that writing down your thoughts, worries, and even your goals can help reduce anxiety and improve cognitive function.
This exercise over time strengthened my ability to trust the whisper in my mind, guiding me step by step to a calmer, clearer and more focused life.
Mental Priming Exercise #2: Spoken Affirmations
Speak yourself into being.
I resisted this for a long time. I’d write affirmations down, but I shy’d away from speaking them out loud. Over time, I’ve come to understand that spoken words carry an energetic force.
This practice is not just wishful words—it’s a method for aligning your thoughts, emotions, and actions with your beliefs, ultimately transforming your reality.
Mental Priming Exercise #3: Video Diaries
Capture your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on camera.
I record my video diaries for one simple purpose: to realign myself to the path in that particular moment. Something about the discomfort of talking on camera pulls you right into the present moment. If you spend enough time doing it, you’ll become much more comfortable speaking to your inner self.
I’ve watched only a handful of the 200+ videos I’ve logged and stored. I have no plans to publish these videos.
But it helps knowing they exist—as a record of me living through the days, becoming who I am.
“If you want to have more, do more, and be more, it all begins with the voice that no one else hears.” — Tim Ferriss
Take the first step: choose one mental priming exercise and commit to it for a week.
Observe the changes in your mindset and daily life. Remember, it’s not about achieving the impossible; it’s about taking realistic steps towards a more mindful and present way of living.
