Dare to Be Different: 3 Mistakes To Avoid If You Want To Be Authentic as a Freelance Content Creator

Be you, not who you think other people want you to be.

As a creative professional or freelance content creator, the pressure to conform to societal expectations can be stifling. Authenticity is your secret weapon in a world where digital facades often overshadow genuine expression. It’s a unique frequency that will attract the right people into your life.

Authenticity begins when you let go of expecting yourself to be anything other than what you are. It isn’t easy.

I’ve spent the past three years learning to accept myself so I can be more at ease in my authenticity. I made a few mistakes along the way.

Avoid these three mistakes I made–and you will be well on your way to authenticity.

Mistake 1: Succumbing to societal expectations and self-imposed limitations

Society imposes expectations on how we should act and think. However, to truly stand out in the arena of content creation, it’s essential to resist these limitations. Start by identifying what you enjoy but feel a bit embarrassed to share.

Lean into those interests and trust that your perspective will resonate with others.

Mistake 2: Ignoring your personal experiences and ideas when creating content

Your life and your experiences throughout it are a goldmine for authentic content. Draw on your ideas, beliefs, and passions to create content that resonates with others. By sharing your journey, your thoughts and emotions, you create a connection with your audience that transcends superficial appearances.

The story of your life is unique to you. Somewhere out there is a person deeply interested in that story.

Mistake 3: Neglecting the compounding power of an authentic online community

Authenticity breeds authenticity. As you share more of your genuine interests online, you’ll find others who appreciate and relate to your specific curiosities. Foster a supportive, faithful online community by engaging and collaborating with others who share your quirks and oddities.

This is the biggest mistake I made. For too long, I held myself back from participating. I didn’t believe I had anything to say.

I was wrong.

The more I engaged, the more positive feedback I received.

You are not alone. The world is bigger than it’s ever been. When you put yourself into the world, the right people will find you.

The Authenticity Advantage

When you dare to be different, people will want to know your perspective.

By avoiding my mistakes, you’ll attract like-minded people who value your ideas and appreciate you for who you are.

The authenticity advantage is powerful in freelance content creation. Presenting yourself authentically online will attract a loyal audience interested in not only what you think–but how you think.

Send out your signal. Whether it’s a bat signal or a transmission from another galaxy, someone out there is listening and searching for it.
