SwS – Screen portals, accountability, & life comes fast

Happy Sunday, Reader

We got it,” she said.

Sarah put down her phone and looked up at me with bright eyes.

I could feel a wave of relief wash over me. After weeks of searching, applying, and hoping, we finally had a new place.

It wasn’t easy. The uncertainty, the disappointment, and the stress wasn’t fun.

A month ago, we were sitting on the couch, processing the news that we’d have to move again.

Now, as we sat on that same couch, letting the good news sink in, I could feel the excitement building.

I guess it’s time for a new adventure,” I said.

And time to start packing,” Sarah said, looking around the apartment.

I nodded with a mix of anticipation and nervousness. “Another new home, another new neighbourhood, and another move.”

“And three levels for the cats to explore,” she added, “I’m so excited for them!”

It felt good to be feeling optimistic again, let me tell you.

Saying goodbye to a familiar place is bittersweet, but it’s also exhilarating to face the unknown.

The whirlwind of emotions and logistics forces you into the here and now to write your story right now.

From the initial dread to the final excitement, it’s a journey that tests you every step of the way.

As we pack our life up into boxes, we’re also packing up our hopes and dreams for the future. We’re ready to see what awaits in the next chapter.

The friction of uncertainty becomes the embers of change.

May notables:

🏘️ A new home in Marda Loop – The new place in a new (to us) area of the city, just outside of downtown. A 3-level townhouse that checks all the boxes we were looking for, from a patio for the cats to a 3rd room for the extra bed, and even a garage to squeeze in a vehicle.

📦 Packing for a one-day move – We’re aiming to play the ultimate game of Tetris for the move. In the past, we’ve taken our time to transition from one place to the next over a week. Doing the full move in one day is a bit daunting, but we’re excited to make it quick (and hopefully painless).

💙🧡 Oilers fever: It’s that time of year when, whether I like it or not, I bleed orange and blue. The Oilers are in the third round of playoffs, and I’m here for every heart-squeezing moment. Today, they’re the closest they’ve been to the finals since ’06. LFG!

3 lessons learned in May

I. Screens are portals into different realms — sometimes useful, sometimes not.

Our screens open up endless possibilities, connecting us to opportunities and ideas we wouldn’t encounter otherwise. But if you’re like me, you have to be careful. It’s easy to succumb to the pull of social media, losing life with mindless scrolling.

Choose your portals wisely.

II. Accountability only works if the stakes are attached to emotions.

We can make all the promises in the world to ourselves, but without a real emotional investment, we tend to let things slide. It’s easy to let ourselves down. But when I know someone else is counting on me, when my identity is tied to the outcome, I’m far more likely to follow through.

Commitments take root in the soil of connection.

III. Life comes fast but not as fast as future worries.

The mind is a time traveller, jumping between the past and the future. But usually, the future holds our attention tightest, filling us with worries about what could be. The reality is, life will always throw curveballs our way, and when they do arrive, we find a way to handle them.

Don’t let the ghosts of the future haunt your present.

Three interesting things

I’ll leave you with a quote 🤔

“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.”

Mary Oliver

Until next time, remember to live and let go,

Scotty
