Welcome to the end of May and another edition of Sunday’s With ScootyDub. I appreciate your time and attention as you skim over these words. I hope you are well and ready for the arrival of summer!
🖋️ I posted a blog titled “Meditations 2.1”. It’s a commentary on my favourite passage from Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. A reminder to be kind and compassionate with the people around me. I return to this passage often to keep it fresh in my mind.
📖 I posted book notes on Ego Is The Enemy by Ryan Holiday. There are three stages of any endeavour in life: aspiration, success, failure. At each stage, there are aspects of ego to be aware of. It reminded me to focus on the process and not the outcome. Success comes from learning to contend with failure, not from being perfect at something right away.
I. Article that contains many tidbits of wisdom
99 Additional Bits of Unsolicited Advice by Kevin Kelly (~10 minute read)
Kevin Kelly is a well-traveled writer, photographer, and creator famous for founding Wired magazine. His bits of advice cover a wide range of topics, from tying knots to eating dessert to borrowing and lending money. A few of my favourites:
– If your goal does not have a schedule, it is a dream.
– You can eat any dessert you want if you take only 3 bites.
– Avoid hitting the snooze button. That’s just training you to oversleep.
– If you borrow something, try to return it in better shape than you received it. Clean it, sharpen it, fill it up.
– Being wise means having more questions than answers.
A balcony or porch needs to be at least 6 feet (2m) deep or it won’t be used.
II. Video That taught me something I didn’t know I needed to know
The REAL Reason McDonald’s Ice Cream Machines are Always Broken by Johnny Harris (29 minute video)
A deep dive into an issue everyone has dealt with. Johnny Harris takes you on a fascinating journey that weaves through the bureaucracy of big business. The answer is frustrating and not terribly surprising. Harris is a fantastic journalist and storyteller.
III. Book that made me feel centered as I read it
The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer
A book on spirituality that provided valuable reminder after reminder that we all have a choice as to how we perceive life. We make ourselves suffer unnecessarily by ruminating on things outside of our control. If we learn to let go, we can allow life to happen as it will instead of trying to force it to be a particular way.
