Happy Tuesday!
Welcome to an overdue edition of the newsletter. Thank you to those of you that reached out asking about last month’s lack of newsletter. My apologies for not letting you know what I was up to. The end of July was hectic. I was in the midst of moving and adjusting to a new job. Unfortunately, the newsletter and my other creative outlets are what got sacrificed. Even this edition was a troublesome one to get out, seeing as we’re here on a Tuesday. But I’m here, you’re here, and we’re ready to get back into it!
After an arduous search, Sarah and I found a lovely place to live, still near the river. It was a hot and sweaty move, but we, along with the cats, have settled in nicely.
With Sarah and I living together, and the price of everything going up, we decided it would be best if I found a more stable income for the time being. I was lucky enough to find a job at a Japanese restaurant called Lonely Mouth Bar. It was an adjustment after not working behind a bar for over 2 years. But I’ve found my way back into it, and I’m enjoying the new challenge.
In addition to moving and working, we have been busy attending summer weddings. I’m writing this in the car on the way to Kicking Horse for our third and final wedding of the summer.
It’s been a busy and interesting summer, but I’m looking forward to things slowing down a bit as we transition into fall. I want to find more space to create and explore. I’m thrilled to be facing new problems to solve and things to consider. But there is room for more balance. If you made it this far, thanks for caring, and I hope you are well.
Three value-packed things to share 🌎
I. VIDEO/SPEECH examining the complexity of human experience

This Is Water by David Foster Wallace (YouTube)
I stumbled on this speech by David Foster Wallace once again. I like to listen to it every year. I find it a wonderful perspective on the complexity of life. There are so many intricacies of this life, it is beyond comprehension. I like to remind myself of that every so often.
One Key Takeaway:
- We’re all living in our own realities. Don’t assume that other people see things the same way you do.
II. PODCAST on what it takes to motivate people

All The Hacks – The Language and Actions of Great Leaders with David Marquet
Can you imagine being in charge of a submarine crew, hundreds of feet under the ocean? Making a wrong decision can have dire consequences. This is a fascinating perspective of leadership and motivating people through the eyes of a former submarine commander. Hat tip to my Dad for this recommendation.
One Key Takeaway:
- Teamwork works best when everyone takes responsibility for their part as well as the whole. There is no “they,” there is only “we.” If they made a mistake, we all made a mistake.
III. ARTICLE on simplifying to-do lists to fit your temperament

One thing, now by Oliver Burkeman (3min read)
As I finished the second paragraph, I thought, “That’s me!” I love when a task is laid out before me. I’m a big fan of making to-do lists. But I also have quite a propensity for over-complicating things. This was a welcome reminder you can only do one thing at a time.
One Key Takeaway:
- One thing at a time. That is all we can reasonably expect to do. Do one thing. Start again on the next thing.

I’ll leave you with a quote 🤔
“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will shrike you as the most beautiful.”

If you enjoyed the newsletter, do me a favour and share it with one person.
I haven’t figured out how to do one of those auto-share buttons, so you’ll need to copy and paste, like we used to before phones got so smart.
I hope you have a swell September!

P.S. Hey wanna see something cool?
