Sunday’s With ScootyDub (November 28, 2021)

Happy American Thanksgiving weekend and welcome to the newsletter! No one reading this is American, but hey, I try to celebrate whenever I can.

🎄 Christmas is in 27 days. Enjoy the anticipation, it’s the best part.

🌞 Highlights of my November:

  • I’ve been helping my girlfriend’s godfather renovate his kitchen. I don’t consider myself much of a handyman, but I’ve done better than expected. It’s nice to be in situations of forced-improvement.
  • I returned to an old video game called Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 and enjoyed a nostalgic ride through the galaxy.

✒️ I wrote a short story called “Running In The Rain”. It’s a 2-minute read. I wrote it as a reminder to myself. A reminder to pay attention. I think you’ll like it.

🌎 Here are three things I found on the internet this month:

I. VIDEO that inspires the spirit of giving

The “GIFTING HOLY TRINITY” & More by Van Neistat

I struggle with gift giving. I don’t know if it’s my frugality or my minimalism or just selfishness, but it’s not my forte. As I write this, I haven’t started Christmas shopping. I have some ideas but those won’t make people feel loved. That’s the point Van is trying to share in this video. It’s a fun list of his twelve rules for gift giving.

My favourite is to heed the “gifting holy trinity”: any gift should have at least 2/3 of Nice, Made, Thoughtful. I hope to incorporate this holy trinity this holiday season.

“The point of gift giving is to make people feel loved (even if you don’t love them).”
— Van Neistat

II. PODCAST that predicts the future of commerce

Tim Ferriss Show #542: The Wonders of Web 3 & Much More

Web3? NFTs? DogeCoin? I barely know what any of these things are. But I want to. I’ve heard and seen just enough to know it’s worth paying attention to. And that’s why I was thrilled to see Tim Ferriss release a podcast answering those questions with the help of Chris Dixon and Naval Ravikant.

I think this conversation provides a solid, if rudimentary, understanding of what is on the horizon for the internet. After listening to this podcast, I’m convinced times-are-a-changing. I doubt this will be the last time you see mention of Web3 in this newsletter.

I recommend reading along with the transcript too. I jotted a lot of notes while listening.

III. TV SHOW that had me hooked on its depth of human experiences

Alone Season 1 on Kanopy

Few reality TV shows capture the true, unfiltered reality of the human experience. This show does. 10 participants are dropped off in a remote area of northern Vancouver Island. They’re tasked with surviving on the land for as long as they can until one is left standing. All of the participants start high on confidence. As the enthusiasm fades away, you see people at their purest. One by one, they tap out. As time goes on, you see the full effects of being alone in the harsh wilderness. It’s a very compelling show.

To access Kanopy, you just need a library card number. If you don’t have a library card, you should. It’s free in most places. I can’t guarantee my link will work for you, but it should get you most of the way there.

A Quote to Consider

“What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future.”
