Sunday’s With ScootyDub (March 27, 2022)

Welcome to the 12th edition of the newsletter. A year already! What a ride it’s been. Thank you to each and every one of you reading this. Writing these newsletters has helped me evolve as a writer and a creator. It’s a great medium to experiment in public. The force of social accountability is strong! I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey and found some value along the way. I really do appreciate your time and attention. I’m excited to find out what the next 12 editions bring!

I spent some extra time on this one, playing with the formatting and other minor details you probably won’t notice. My hope is that it’s just a bit more readable, concise, and valuable. Thanks for browsing. Have yourself a wonderful rest of your day!

Three value-packed things to share 🌎

I. PODCAST on money-management mindset, writing, and living a happy life

Scootydub newsletter Tim Ferriss Show #576 with Morgan Housel youtube

Tim Ferriss Show #576 with Morgan Housel (YouTube)

Another valuable conversation courtesy of Tim Ferriss. Morgan Housel is the author of The Psychology of Money. He worked in the finance world before stumbling into writing. He’s a fantastic storyteller and I appreciate his philosophy on wealth and happiness.

You can read the transcript here, if you fancy that sort of thing.

Three valuable ideas:

  1. Buying stuff to impress others is a waste of money because no one cares about you. They are too busy thinking about themselves.
  2. Not all your financial decisions need to “make sense.” Sometimes, it’s worthwhile to make a financial decision that is “incorrect” on paper, like paying off your mortgage early because it gives you peace of mind.
  3. There is no universal right or wrong approach to money because everyone is different.

II. ARTICLE with 13 thoughts on how to define and achieve success

scootydub newsletter Sam Altman how to be successful

How To Be Successful by Sam Altman (15 minute read)

This article sat unread in an open tab for two weeks. I don’t remember how I found it. I’d never heard of Sam Altman before. The title seemed trite. I was put off by the length of it on my first skim. When I returned to it, while procrastinating, the longer read was totally doable.

It’s not much of a read for how much value it contains. I’ve read books that contain much less practical advice. It’s worth a skim if nothing else.

Three valuable ideas:

  1. Compound yourself
  2. Have almost too much self-belief
  3. Learn to think independently

III. LIST of things you can do but probably don’t

Scootydub newsletter Milan Cvitkovic things you're allowed to do

Things You’re Allowed To Do by Milan Cvitkovic

This is sort of a niche list. It starts off applying primarily to the realm the author exists in. But it expands out to things that anyone can appreciate. If nothing else, it will make you think about a few things you could do to make your life easier or more enjoyable for very little cost or compromise.

Three valuable ideas:

  1. Use task-specific devices that prevent multitasking
  2. Figure out how much your time is really worth to you, and then act/spend accordingly.
  3. In general, just ask for things, even if you’ve never heard someone ask for them.
    — It’s okay if the things are crazy. You can always mollify afterward by saying “I know that’s a crazy thing to ask for, but I have a rule that I always ask.” —

I’ll leave you with a quote 🤔

“A year from now, you will wish you started today.”

If you enjoyed the newsletter, do me a favour and share it with one person.

I haven’t figured out how to do one of those auto-share buttons, so you’ll need to copy and paste like we used to before phones got so smart.

I hope you have an angelic April!
