This will be a shorter edition of the newsletter. I left it later than I usually do, procrastinating in the weekend sun. All I have to show for my efforts is a sunburnt chest. But don’t worry, I still found a few interesting things.
June was a busy month.
I got contracted to do digital marketing work for Uthrive, the acupuncture/physio/chiro/massage clinic Sarah works at. I updated their website and brought their social profiles back to life. It’s been a great exercise to figure out how to market in an industry I wasn’t familiar with.
Sarah and I have been contending with the stupidly competitive rental market in Calgary, looking for a place to live. Lots of browsing, lots of showings, and lots of applications. We have a few promising prospects. Fingers crossed we will know more soon.
Against my better judgment, I’ve been keeping up with the Stanley Cup playoffs. I told myself I don’t need to be watching hockey in the summer. I just can’t help but get caught up in the magic of it. The nostalgia runs deep.
When I’m not watching hockey, I’ve been walking a lot, thankfully. Living a life of luxury by not having to drive very often. Doing my best to get back into the flow of life. Looking forward to a busy summer.
Three value-packed things to share 🌎
I. PODCAST on Stoic philosophy and living a meaningful life

JRE #1836 – Ryan Holiday (Spotify)
A clashing of worlds. Two of my favourite thinkers meeting for the first time to have a conversation. They discussed Stoicism as it applies to the world today. Exploring ideas like the dangers of ideology, personal discipline, and the evolution of media manipulation.
One Key Takeaway:
- “When I’m working on a book, books are hard, and when I’m halfway through, I’m like ‘This isn’t coming together. This sucks. Should I stop?’ I know this feeling very well and I know that you don’t listen to this feeling, so fuck off. You have to build that because you’re going to go through hard things in life, and you want to have cultivated a sense of no quitting.” — Ryan Holiday
II. VIDEO asking is self-help really helpful?

I read 100 self-help books. Here’s what I learned … (YouTube)
As a fan help of the self-help genre, I appreciated the subtle reminders throughout this video. The information only works if you do something with it. I’ve fallen into this trap before and I’m sure I will fall into it again. I made some tweaks to my process after watching this video.
One Key Takeaway:
- “… self-help is about the self, that’s you. With every piece of content you consume, consider how you can be an active participant in your own journey by questioning, implementing, and taking action in your own life.” — Matt D’Avella
III. PODCAST/TALK SHOW exploring how Bill Burr became Bill Burr

Legendary Comedian Bill Burr — Fear{less} with Tim Ferriss (YouTube)
And another clashing of worlds! This time it’s author/podcaster Tim Ferriss interviewing comedian Bill Burr. I’ve been a fan of both for years. It was interesting to see Bill Burr in a different context. He’s still the same guy, but the questions are different, so the stories are different. And throughout the conversation, there are tidbits of solid, no-bullshit advice. A fascinating view into the perspective of an authentic individual.
One Key Takeaway:
- “I look at the business [comedy or any other creative business] like it’s a giant mall and I have a little store. I have what I do. This is what I do. You come in, this is what I do. If you want to buy something, great. If you don’t, you can keep going.” — Bill Burr
Photos of the Month 📷

I’ll leave you with a quote 🤔
“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s a day you’ve had everything to do and you’ve done it.”
— Margaret Thatcher
If you enjoyed the newsletter, do me a favour and share it with one person.
I haven’t figured out how to do one of those auto-share buttons, so you’ll need to copy and paste, like we used to before phones got so smart.
I hope you have a joyous July!
