The most important thing is curiosity.
If you are curious enough about life and the seemingly endless complexities it entails, you will never stop finding things to pique that curiosity. It took me some time to rediscover an interest in reading, but I’m extremely happy that I did.
Reading has once again become a mainstay of my daily life. In a world with so many forms of entertainment and distraction, it is easy to forget how wonderful it can be to get lost in a book. And when it comes to learning and understanding, the written word is still the most visceral way to convey ideas.
Nothing creative will ever be perfect, and that is just something I need to accept. I might not be able to express my ideas as well as the writers I admire and respect, but everyone has got to start somewhere. I need to embrace the ups and downs and keep moving forward.
Setting goals can be problematic for some people, myself included. The issues begin when you realize that setting goals mean that you are also defining your own failures. Then, you run into the problem that many goals require you to go from 0-10 by tomorrow. You might be able to force that for a short time, but almost inevitably, you will fall back to your baseline and struggle to start again.
You cannot change or move forward simply by thinking about it. You must actively try new things and likely fail while doing it. It is through the process of trying and failing that you will learn about yourself and what you actually want to do. I spent a long time trying to will myself to be better, and I struggled with the complete lack of results. I didn’t want to fail again, so I didn’t try anything new. I was waiting for some unknown passion to come find me while I hid away from the world.
